Africa in Fact Issue 27, October 2014: On the fence
This month’s Africa in Fact looks at property rights. The lack of clear, enforceable property rights is stunting Africa’s development. Even though most of sub-Saharan Africa’s population, 62.8% according to the World Bank, lives in rural areas, only 10% of rural land is registered, according to a 2013 World Bank report. City-dwellers fare little better: 61.7% of sub-Saharan Africa’s urban population lived in slums in 2010, mostly without property titles, according to UN Habitat.
